Hey guys!
As someone who thought Master of Orion really failed to live up to its legacy (my full written review here: https://explorminate.net/2016/08/25/master-of-orion-conquer-the-star-review/, I come before you with great news:
The new FREE content patch coming December 1 for MoO is exactly what this game needed to be fun.
First, it brings back the minor races and implements them well. Now there's a bonus provided to the race that controls their system for every planet in that system. You can invest in this bonus and make it better, too. One race gives a bonus to research generated by each planet and investing increases that bonus. Much more important strategically and worth fighting for.
Next, the espionage got updated. You now train spies when you want to and can afford to. You also now target empires, not specific planets. Unless you want to infiltrate a specific planet and sabotage it, etc. it's a significant improvement.
Next, leaders return and make replayability much improved. There are pilots and governors, each with unique bonuses to combat or colony output. They each have a backstory that is short, but interesting. It's a significant gameplay mechanic that is well done and fun.
There are also some upgrades to combat, including a pseudo-turn based option that pauses combat every chosen second increment. Want it paused every five seconds to reevaluate? That is now possible.
Finally, the Antarans are back and with them, a new victory condition. I won't give away much here, but I'll tell you that they're really well done.
In short, this free content, along with the paid DLC of three new and cool races, makes MoO a much different, and much BETTER, 4X game.
It's finally time to get excited about it.
